at Echuca), are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
His funeral to move from his late residence, Bay- street, Sandridge, THIS DAY (Thursday), 15th inst at half past 2 o'clock.
James Flett, Birth Year: abt 1826, Age: 40, Death Place: Victoria, Father's name: James, Mother's name: Elizabeth Sinclair
Registration Year: 1866, Registration Place: Victoria, Registration Number: 1283.
Bendigo Advertiser Thursday 15th March 1866; Fatal Accident.-A melancholy accident occurred on Tuesday morning, whereby Mr Jas Flett, one of the foremen employed at the building of the new wharf, Echuca, lost his life. From what we gathered immediately after the accident, it appeared that the unfortunate man was engaged at the top of the wharf, near the lower end, in assisting to raise a pontoon that had sunk the day
previous, when the chain got entangled with an iron bolt. He was pushing the chain off with one hand, using an iron bar to assist him with the
other, when the chain suddenly gave, dragged him from his seat, and he was precipitated from a height of nearly forty feet to the ground beneath.
He fell upon a piece of timber of irregular shape, and he was speedily picked up and carried into Mr Dwyer's house, whence he was removed to Messrs Matthews Brothers' store, where a few hours later he breathed his last. The injuries indicted were of a frightful nature, the least of them being a compound fracture and terrible laceration of the right arm, the bone protruding in a shocking manner. The immediate cause of death was the fracture of several ribs, which penetrated the lungs, causing effusion. He was attended by Dr Crossen, who from the first held out no hopes of his recovery. Intelligence of the catastrophe was at once telegraphed to his home at Sandridge. Poor Flett was much respected by all with whom he had come in contact during his residence in Echuca as a steady aud industrious workman. We believe that he leaves a wife and large family to mourn his premature decease, who are, how ever, not left unprovided for. The works at the wharf were suspended yesterday from a feeling of respect towards the deceased.- Riverine Herald.
