- Thomas was the captain of the S.S. Petunia from 1911, which was torpedoed in WW1 in May 1917.
He was captured and interned in Germany until 1918. After Thomas arrived home he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and decorated by His Majesty the King at Buckingham Palace on 21st May 1919.
He together with his son, captured two German Air Force officers after they crashed at his farmhouse Flotterston in Sandwick on Christmas Day 1939. He sold his farm in 1956.
He was awarded the MBE for War Services on Jan 4th 1944.
Thomas died on 19th March 1957 whilst building a new house in Finstown.
