Eday New Kirkyard, Orkney, Scotland

Notes:
There are 2 burial grounds on Eday, St Mary's, by the shore near Skaill on the east side of Eday is the Old Kirkyard which contains around 450 headstones of which the earliest readable inscription is from the mid 1820's, and the New Kirkyard which is approx half a mile inland, where the first burial was in 1961.

The Statistical Account for Scotland 1791- 99 mentions the following;

Page 418; "About the time of the Reformation, there were five parish kirks in this district. Three in the island of Stronsay, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to St. Peter and St. Nicholas; the fourth in the island of Eday, dedicated also to the Virgin Mary; and the fifth in the isle of Fairy, to what faint dedicated, tradition gives no information."

Page 419; " There is an old chapel in ruins on the island of Eday."

Page 424; " The Kirk of Eday which was built about the year 1730 is in a ruinous state; it had not a pane of glass in any of its windows in the memory of any man living."

By the Statistical Account for Scotland 1834-45, the Rev. John Simpson, Minister writes regarding Stronsay and Eday;

" There are two parish churches, both in central parts in these islands. The one in Stronsay was built in 1821 and the other in Eday, in 1816. Besides these, there are two places of worship connected with the United Secession. That in Stronsay was built in 1800, and that in Eday, in 1829."
The Parish Minister in Stronsay crossed the Sound (in breadth four miles) every fourth Sabbath, to preach in Eday.
But in the Spring of 1834 the Committee of the General Assembly for managing the Royal Bounty, appointed the present missionary minister to officiate in Eday, and since that time, the parish of Eday has enjoyed the same benefit of public worship, every Sabbath, as Stronsay.

"There are two churches; the church at Stronsay, erected in 1821, is a neat structure containing 500 sittings, and that of Eday, erected in 1816, contains 300. Divine service was formerly performed at each, on fixed Sabbaths, by the minister of the parish, who resides at Stronsay; but in 1834 a missionary was appointed by the General Assembly, with a stipend of £50, to officiate at Eday, where he has a manse, erected by subscription. There are also places of worship for members of the United Secession at Stronsay and Eday, and at the former a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. The parochial school, at Stronsay, and a school supported by the Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge, are both well attended: the master of the former has a salary of £25. 13. 3., with a house and garden, and school fees averaging £5; and the master of the latter, a salary of £15, with fees amounting to £1. 10. There is also a school at Eday supported by the General Assembly, who pay a salary of £25 to the master, whose fees average about £5 per annum. Remains exist of several ancient chapels, and likewise numerous graves, of which one, at Housebay, in Stronsay, contains a number of bodies separated from each other at the head and feet by thin stones, placed edgewise, and at the head supporting a slab which covers the face only."

"Eday’s church - the Lady Kirk at Skaill - seems to have been rebuilt in 1730, but was ruinous by 1779; when described in the 1790s, ‘it had not a pane of glass in any of its windows in the memory of any man living’, and was rebuilt again in 1858. Anderson’s implication that the minister would not travel to Eday, unless the church was repaired, is confirmed to some extent by the later Statistical Account, when the minister was only visiting the island on every fourth Sunday. In 1778, the Lady Kirk is described as possessing a barrel vaulted choir, while Neale states that it ‘must have been the gem of the parish churches of the Orkneys. It was First-Pointed, and consisted of chancel and nave, with bell-tower. The chancel was vaulted seemingly in two bays: and in a style far superior to the usual ecclesiology of the Orkneys’. The only possible traces of this building are the large freestone blocks built into the churchyard dyke. That this was an early site is confirmed by the discovery of six fragments of a whinstone cross-slab in the first half of the twentieth century; the fragments are all now lost, but are possibly of pre-Norse date. The surface of the slab was adorned with a deeply incised cross, having an expanded square centre, D-shaped terminals and a pedestalled base; the shaft of the cross continues towards the now missing base of the cross, while the slab tapers slightly towards the top. This is one of three carved slabs, found at a depth of about six feet below the present surface of the graveyard, but is by far the earliest in date."

"Skaill is located on the south east side of Eday; the only other recorded chapel lies on the south coast of the island. Hannah’s Kirk lay at the bottom of the home pasture field of the farm of Greentoft; a few small stretches of well-laid stonework were visible in the eroded face of the cliff edge, but were destroyed during a gale in 1984.

A mound presumably representing the remains of a chapel survives in the south east corner of the disused burial ground on Faray where there are 33 headstones with 51 readable inscriptions dating from 1819 to 1911. A list of these and the inscriptions can be found on the members part of the Orkney Family History Society website.

While traditionally a monastery was located at The Graand on the Calf of Eday, where all that is visible today is a number of sheep shelters. Although Low noted that there were ‘many small Chapels round the island … all in ruins."

"The author of the Old Statistical Account mentions a ruined chapel on Eday, possibly Hannah’s Kirk - and Clouston postulates a chapel close to Lady Kirk. The only other intimation of a religious site on Eday itself is the placename, Bredakirk, taken to derive from St. Bride’s Kirk. This applies to a small croft; it appears on the modern OS 1:10000 map and is shown on the First edition as Bradakirk. While described as neighbouring Papleyhouse, it does lie some distance to the south of Cusbay, in the township of Guith, at the head of the Bay of Newark."
"It is very difficult indeed to draw any certain conclusions about the significance of this name which is unrecorded before the nineteenth century, especially when there is no known ecclesiastical site nearby, or associated sculpture. It could indeed, as has been suggested, be derived from a family called Paplay (a well-known Orkney surname), as other places in Eday had a ‘house’ name combined with the surname of the family which lived, or had lived, there."
