The Kadina and Wallaroo Times Saturday 22 May 1915; Obituary.-Mr John Allen, father of the member for Yorke Peninsula, who died at Auburn on May 14 th last, was one of the oldest and best-known residents of that district. He was a native of Orkney, where he was born on January 9, 1826. He arrived in South Australia about 1850, and was at once engaged by the late Dr. Browne to assist in opening up pastoral country in the north. Three years after reaching this province, he secured land in the Hundred of Upper Wakefield, near Auburn, where he engaged in farming pursuits and passed the remainder of his life. The deceased always evinced a keen interest in matters pertaining to the welfare of the community. He rendered years of good service, both as Councillor and Chairman of the Upper Wakefield District Council. A quiet, unassuming man, whose word was his bond, he was deservedly honoured and respected by all who knew him. Although in his ninetieth year before his death, Mr Allen was remarkably active and erect, and was a well-known figure at Auburn. His wife predeceased him by four years. There survive :-Four sons-James (Cunliffe), Peter (Norwood), John(Port Wakefield), and William (Auburn)-and three daughters-Mesdames S H.Hunt (Unley), J. Guthrie (Watervale), and W. Munro (Pirie ). | 23 | "Another Butzbach migrant was Konrad Lemp and it was he who Susanna fell in love with and married in 1864. Though his parents had Nieder-Weisel-like names - Jakob Lemp and Susanna nee Heinz - there was no relationship between his family and Susanna's. Konrad Lemp had arrived in Victoria aboard "Undine" in 1855. Although he was a baker by profession, Konrad was working as a digger; he and Susanna went to Rocky Lead. There, Susanna gave birth to their daughter Alice Louise in June 1864. A son was born in 1866 and took the name of his godfather, Gernand Lemp, who was Konrad's brother. The Lemps then returned to Ballarat, as did the Schuld family, where they settled permanently. Susanna was kept busy during the next twelve years rearing three more sons and three daughters: Jakob in 1870; Catherine, 1871; Maria Susanna 1873; William 1875; Conrad Louis in 1878 and, finally, Lily Susanna in 1880." Note that above, a Gernand Lemp is given as Konrad's brother. There is also a G Lemp, labelled" nephew" who was a pallbearer at Konrad Lemp's funeral. LEMP C 21 JAN 1855 UNDINE F 029 007. The Undine sailed from Hamburg on 12th September 1854, and arrived in Melbourne on 15th January 1855. The Undine had on board 110 passengers, all with German names. Mrs R. Thompson. of Hesse street, sustained a. severe loss by the death of her father, Mr C. Lemp, of Geelong Rd., Ballarat East. Deceased arrived in the colonies in the 50's, sailing in the ship, "Undine" after an eventful passage. He was engineer by profession, but of late carried on business as a baker, being known as the French Bakery. He was 80 years old at his death and had been 70 years a colonist. He leaves a grown up family of 3 daughters and 5 sons, the two youngest at present fighting in France, as well as 5 grand children, all of whom have been away since Sept., 1914. The deceased was in Ballarat during the Eureka Riot. | 24 | "Charles Still Louttit Millar B.E.M., was born on August the 6th 1935 at Shortie in Evie in the Orkney Islands, he passed away at 10:15am on December 29th 2006 in Macmillan House in Kirkwall. He was surrounded by his wife and children. He was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in July 2006, unfortunately dad rejected chemotherapy so his only hope was radiotherapy which they couldn't give forever. Dad's idea was to eat as much as was possible, feeding the cancer so it couldn't feed on him. If only it had worked, I wouldn't feel as lost as I do at this time. At the time of his retirement his occupation was Superintendent of Burial Grounds, he had to keep working until he was 66 because nobody could do what he had done, the burial grounds were only a small part of his job. Dad had worked his way up through Kirkwall Town Council and Orkney Islands Council, he knew all that needed to be known about his Orkney. His final job was as Clerk to the Holm Graveyard which had him out marking graves in blizzards and bright sunshine. Dad was called up in 1954 to do his National Service and was stationed in Egypt with the Royal Horse Artillery taking part in the Suez Crisis, his two years National Service made him who he was. On returning to Orkney he found employment difficult so then crossed the Pentland Firth to build the Dounreay Nuclear Plant, he rose to foreman before the dome was finished. He was working in Longhope when his second love came in to his life, the Royal British Legion, which he joined in 1958. His love for the Royal British Legion lasted a lifetime, he was in the Colour Party, the Earl Haig Association where he became chairman and his very final post for them was as chairman of the Kirkwall Branch an appointment that made him very proud. Dad was very hurt when he asked me to write a letter of resignation for him, it was as if he had decided that he had no chance of recovering, the cancer had won. My dad married Margaret Harrold in St Magnus Cathedral on August 11th 1961. They went on to have three children Eoin in 1963, Agnes in 1967 and Heather in 1968 this completed their family. Dad also loved his grandchildren, Chrystall, Kylie, Nicholas and Ellen, they meant the world to him. Dad was one of eight children Rita, Ralph, Doreen, Frankie, Mabel, Thelma, then came dad, John and last but by no means least Kenny. In 1966 dad started his connection with HMS Royal Oak, he knew all that he could about her loss in Orkney waters, which made her part of the place he loved. The first Memorial Service he attended was on 14th October 1966, the last one he attended was exactly 40 years later on 14th October 2006. We all wondered where he got the strength from for that last special weekend but as dad always said "I am never alone, even when i'm on my own" definitely something was helping him. Dad wanted to do everything that weekend especially the fact that he was to conduct a service over the wreck for the Falklands war hero, Simon Weston, the service became more special because for the very first time in forty years he saw the wreck in all it's splendour. Simon Weston said "I have come here once and seen the Royal Oak yet a man who has been in this spot for forty years has seen it for the first time. He shed a few tears that day, it was as if H.M.S Royal Oak was saying it's own goodbye to my dad. Dad took many families and survivors out for a service over the wreck, then back to the house for tea and sandwiches to warm them up. Each one of those visitors became part of our extended family sending letters, cards and phone calls from all corners of the world. Dad sang baritone in St Magnus Cathedral choir for forty years, he was an elder with the church for the same forty years and was a founder member of the Friends of St Magnus. Dad looked great in his town crier uniform which doubled as his halberdier uniform, no doubt he wore many other jackets. There were jackets he always wore to do certain things, they didn't change the man inside the jacket, he was always my dad. Dad was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's New Years Honours List for services to Orkney in 1991 but the honour that meant the world to him was in 2005 when he was voted Orkney Citizen of the Year by the people of Orkney and further afield, with worldwide votes for a hugely popular man. Everything dad did was done with 100% effort, he loved the sound of pipes and on Saturday nights he would be on Kirkwall's Broad Street with a bucket collecting for Kirkwall City Pipe Band. Dad could get any person to give a donation from the smallest of child to the oldest man or woman, nobody got away from him. At his Memorial Service on 6th January 2007 pipe band members past and present gathered to pay tribute to their biggest fan. They did you proud dad, i'm sure you saw them all. Dad lived by the Legion motto, Service not Self, but he also had his own motto: Good people are scarce. Well dad, the day you went we lost the best of all those good people, nobody comes close. He gave evidence against the laird, General Burroughs, at a hearing on the Napier Commission set up in 1883 to look at the condition of crofters in the Highlands and Islands. | 27 | "Mrs J P Rendall - Mrs Caroline Rendall, 90, who died at 7:30 pm Sunday at the Titusville Hospital, had been in comparatively good health until she suffered a light stroke about 2:30 am Saturday. She was taken to the hospital at that time. She had stayed with Mr and Mrs Charles Weldon of Grand Valley for the past two years. Born Feb 2, 1867, in Rome Township, she was a daughter of Jacob and Magdaline Sandel Kunz. She was married to James P Rendall in the Rometown United Presbyterian Church on June 6, 1904. He died Jan 20, 1937. Mrs Rendall lived in the Rome Township community on the family homestead after the death of her husband until 1944, when she went to live with relatives in this district. Later she went to Wilmington, Del, where she made her home for five years with a nephew, Arthur J Matteson. In May of 1955, she went to Grand Valley to live with the Weldons. She was a member of the Vroman Ladies Aid and the United Presbyterian Church there. She leaves two brothers, Jesse E Kunz of Cloverdale (Titusville, RD 1), and Harry A Kunz of Little Cooley, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Arnold Funeral Home...The body will be taken to the Rometown United Presbyterian Church on Wednesday to be on view from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, when the funeral service will be held. | 29 | "My HILL family was at Greta in the 1890's and the early 1900's. George Snell HILL was a miner and his wife Mary HILL was a school teacher. She was a teacher at Greta and then she was promoted to Infants Mistress at New Lambton and, finally, at Lambton. A couple of days ago I saw her pay records for 1908 at the State Archives - she was then Infants Mistress at Lambton, earning an annual salary of One Hundred and Eighty Pounds, paid monthly, (Fifteen Pounds a month). Her daughter, Ida Maude HILL, was a provisional teacher at New Lambton for the first three weeks of January 1908. Her pay records then show that she went to Teacher Training. I know she trained at Sydney Teachers College and that was where she met her future husband - Robert STOVE who, later, was a teacher and, eventually, headmaster in the Newcastle area." The new Postmaster-General, William- Guthrie Spence, has had an adventurous career since his arrival in this county when a child, of six years.Born in Eday, in the Orkney Islands,in 1846, he migrated with his familyto Victoria in 1852. and as a child assisted in sheep droving in the mallee country. At about this time the gold fever broke out, and young Spence withhis parents were attracted to the diggings around Ballarat. For many years he was engaged in mining, both alluvial and quartz. His connection with unionism dates back to 1878, when he organised the first miners' association in Viotoria. In the early eighties Mr. Spence visited the other States. In 1898, Mr. Spence entered the New South Wales Parliament as the member for Cobar, and on the Initiation, of Federation was elected as the representative for the-Darling division in the House of Representatives, a seat which he has held ever since. Mr. Robert Flett, an old and respected resident of Port Pirie, received on December 8 news that his son, Corporal Roy Flett, had been killed in action on November 5. Corporal Flett, who had been residing with hia parents in Unley Park, was 26 years of age. He enlisted in August, 1915, and left Australia in January last. He was wounded in August, but returned to the firing line and fought beside many of his former Port Pirie friends, who in their letters spoke in high terms of his soldierly qualities. He was a cabinetmaker, and when at Port Pirie worked for Mr. W. J. Pimlett, about half of whose staff have left for the front. Afterwards he followed his trade at the Adelaide Joinery Works. He was of good physique and a fine type of soldier. His kindly and genial temperament endeared him to all with whom he came into contact. He was an enthusiastic lacrosse player, and when a member of the Port Pirie club, most of the members of which have joined the colors, he was chosen as a representative for South Australia against Victoria. | 36 | "UIG, a parish in the district of Lewis, county Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. It comprises Uig and Carloway, with the islands of Vinavore, Big and Little Bernara, and Pabbay, besides many other islets in Loch Roag. It extends in length about 22.5 miles from N.E. to S.W., with an extreme breadth of 17.25 miles. The district of Uig proper is bounded on the N. by the Ocean and Carloway, on the E. by Stornoway, on the S. by Harris and Loch Reasort, and on the W. by the Atlantic Ocean. The surface chiefly consists of low, barren, heathy hills and flat moors, watered by numerous small lakes, the principal of which is Loch Langavat, 95 miles in length. The coast, which is about 60 miles in extent, is flat and indented with bays abounding in cod, ling, dog-fish, coal-fish, and lobsters, for which last it is much frequented by English vessels. The village of Uig stands on Uig Bay, between lochs Reasort and Shawbost. Many of the inhabitants of the neighbouring hamlets and villages are employed in the fisheries. In the vicinity is Calarnish Druid temple, consisting of a circle of 12 stones, 7 feet in height, and a centre one of 13 feet, with three exterior lines of 3 stones each, and to the N. a double line of 6 each for the entrance. Traces of a nunnery exist at Melista, and of a circular fort at Carlaway, with a wall of 30 feet in height. September, a fatal accident happed to a man named James Miller, in the employ of Mr. D. Brady, at Lochiel. The Kapunda Herald states " that Miller, who was about 50 years of age was engaged carting stone from a quarry on a hill-side with a waggon and four horses, and in starting with his load, the unfortunate man leading the near side shaft horse by the head, walking backwards, the shaft struck him on the breast and knocked him down, both wheels passing over his body. A son of Mr. Brady was close by, and ran to his assistance, but the poor fellow was beyond human aid ; he breathed once, but never spoke or moved. He was dead when picked up by his fellow workmen the next minute. His body must have been frightfully crushed, as there were about three tons of stone on the waggon. Mr. M'Namara, J.P., after a careful consideration of the circumstances, considered an inquest unnecessary and gave the customary certificate for burial. Ron Miller, The history of Cheshunt and the Cheshunt-Degamero Primary School No. 2553, c1983 Cheshunt is a rural village and district upstream along the King River in north-east Victoria. It is 50 km south of Wangaratta and the district extends along several tributaries of the King River. There is State Forest west of Cheshunt, the Black Range to the east and the Wabonga Plateau and Alpine National Park to the south. Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, was the birthplace of an early district settler, Arthur Smith. Plentiful rain and fertile river soils made the area suitable for a range of crops. Tobacco growing has been a staple crop, and some families are of Italian or Spanish origin. There are also orchards and vineyards, along with more conventional pastoral properties. It will be remembered that about 12 months ago, a man named Robert Miller was employed by the Launceston Corporation, working at the Margaret-street sewer.' The wet and exposure so affected his health that a severe cold setled on his spine, eventually affecting his brain, so that a few weeks after he was first laid up, it was found necessary to send him to the New Norfolk Asylum. The wife was left with five children, all girls but one, and only the eldest girl being capable of earning anything. The Council declined to do anything for the family, who have since been maintained by the labour of the mother assisted by the kindness of friends. Miller's condition gradually became worse, and last Saturday he died, his body being brought up to town on Sunday and interred in the Presbyterian cemetery. | Miller, Robert (I2843)

George died 8 years after the newspaper article... in Britain ) Herald Melbourne Monday 11th July 1870 A Large Reward.- The Ballarat Star of to-day contains an advertising announcement of a reward of £10,000 for the discovery of the agent who inserted certain advertisements in the newspapers some years back respecting one George Huxton Muir, of Kirkwall, Orkney. We are informed that the person offering this large reward claims to be the veritable George Huxton Muir referred to in those old advertisements, and that he further claims to be heir to large estates both in Italy and Scotland, and also to very large accumulations of money, and what is more wonderful still, to a dukedom in Italy and a baronetcy in Great Britain. The claim is made through his mother, whose maiden name was Huxton. The matter seems to be enveloped in some little obscurity, in consequence, as Muir asserts, of his long residence (about twenty-five years) in the colonies, having left Kirkwall when he was sixteen years of age, and from his whereabouts being unknown to his friends at home. It seems, however, that Muir was long resident and well known in the Smythesdale district, carrying on business as a storekeeper there, and was much respected as a shrewd and honorable man. In 1863-4 he went to Queensland, and whilst there heard from different quarters that he had been advertised for in the Melbourne papers. It seems that he was so advertised for by the testimony of several of his acquaintances who saw the advertisements. | 47 | ( Australian relatives of some sort of the Caithness Campbells cited on this webpage ) The Laura Standard 4 Jaunuary 1901 South Australia; The Late Mrs Campbell. - We regret to record the death of an old and much-respected resident of Laura in the person of Mrs. Campbell. The deceased lady (who was in her 81st year, and had been in indifferent health for sometime past) died on Dec. 17th at her residence, North Laura. -The late Mrs. Campbell was a native of Kirkwall, in tbe Orkney Islands, in the North of Scotland, and with her late husband left for South Australia as passengers in the ship Fairfield towards the end of 1838, which arrived at Port Adelaide on May I, 1839, the voyage taking six months. They settled, in what was than known as the Old Port, afterwards residing at Alberton for a time. The late Mr. Campbell entered into farming pursuits at Woodville,and after residing there for a number of years removed, to Roseworthy, where he was still engaged as a farmer, in August, 1863 /1868, Mr. Campbell died, and in October, 1872, Mrs. Campbell removed with her family to Laura, carrying on farming for a time in the Hundred of Booyoolie, and then came to reside in the town, Mrs. Campbell was much beloved by many friends as well as by her immediate relatives,and was held in very high esteem' by the townspeople generally. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church,but in the absence of a church of that denomination, had worshipped at the Baptist Church with the other members of tbe family. The deceased lady leaves eight daughters, one daughter (Mrs Lawson) having predeceased her : - Mesdames R. Slater(Port Pirie), Foulis (Queensland),French (Willochra). Speers (PortPirrie), H. Caswell The funeral of Mr. Samuel Caswell, of St. Leonards, took place at Carr Villa cemetery, Launceston, yesterday. Mr. Caswell was in his 100th year. He was bom at Tipperary, Ireland, on March 4, 1842, and married Miss Margaret Fahey, of Launceston. They lived near Nunamara for some years, but Mr. Caswell's home was at Woodlands for more than 50 years, and he was a member of the St. Leonards Rd. Trust for a considerable time. Mrs. Caswell died 10 years ago. The chief mourners at the funeral were Messrs. A., S., H., B., W., and F. Caswell (sons). The pall-bearers were Messrs J. and L. Caswell, B. Fryett, and F.
