Geelong Advertiser Wednesday 11th April 1906, DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.
It will be learned with feelings of regret by a wide circle of friends that an old and highly respected resident of the district passed away last evening in the person of Mrs. Horne, relict of the late Mr. William Horne, of "Anniedale," Allansford. The deceased lady was one of the pioneer settlers in this part of the State, and had resided in the district for upwards of 40 years. She was a native of Westray Island, one of the Orkney group off the coast of Scotland, and came to Victoria in 1854. She married five years later, and for a short time lived at Cudgee, on what is now a
portion of "Dwarroon," and afterwards the family removed to "Anniedale," which they made their permanent home. She was much esteemed for her generous and kindly disposition and, together with her late husband, was held in high regard. She had been in ailing health for some months past, and at the advanced age of 75 years, she peacefully died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. C. Mattinson, of "Westray," Princess-street, Warrnambool. She leaves a grown-up family of four, including Mrs. A. Barrett, of Mair-street, Ballarat; Mrs. G. Reed Horne, of "Booval," Warrnambool; Mrs. J.C Mattinson, and Mr. William Horne, of "Anniedale," with whom much sympathy will be expressed'in the loss, they have sustained.
In the coastal town of Warrnambool, there is a house, named in largish letters named Westray.

The following is courtesy of Mrs Valerie Wilson and the Mornington & District Historical Society;
William Firth arrived in Victoria at the age of sixteen, to join his two brothers, James and John. The three of them went to try their luck on the goldfields without much success. They returned and did contracting work, wood cutting, using their saw-pit for cutting out planks from logs for piers and buildings. William married Ann Scott in June 1882, he was 45 and Ann was 22 years of age. It is said that Ann was the first white child born in Somerville. William established "Orkney" Farm on the east corner of Coolart and Eramosa Roads. It was named after his homeland (Orkney Isles) in Scotland and it was there he devoted his energies to mixed farming. He was one of the first to grow wheat in these parts.
His Clydesdale horses that were put out to stud were well known, and always bought high prices. In July 1882, William was seriously injured when the horse pulling his dray bolted, on the "Tanti Hill". During William’s long residence on the Mornington Peninsula, he acquired 1,000 acres of land. His Scottish ancestry provided him with a keen eye for a bargain, but he won the respect of all who knew him as a kindly neighbour, a staunch friend and a just foe.
Weekly Times Melbourne Saturday 29th Feb. 1908 William Firth, sen.of Somerville, farmer, left estate of the value of L4100 realty and L1103 personally to his widow and children.
