MR THOMAS HAY. WELL-KNOWN SETTLER. The death has occurred of a well known early settler of the Gisborne district, Mr. Thomas Hay, aged 79 years. The son of a Scottish farmer who had settled in Invercargill, Mr. Hay was born in 1865 and came to Gisborne in 1889, marrying Miss Annie Clouston, Tapanui, two years later. He was a bushman and wagoner in the employ of the late Mr A. C. Arthur at Matawhero for about 15 years before commencing farming on his own account, first at Matawhero and later on his well-known property at Waipaoa. At the latter place he cleared the bush and established his home. He became known as one of the best agricultural farmers in the Gisborne district and his farm has been the subject of articles in various publications. His advice on farming matters was widely sought and freely given. He sold his farm to Mr. D. Craill in 1938, retiring to live in Gisborne.
Mr. Hay was keenly interested in all Scottish affairs in Gisborne, belonging to the Burns Club and the Old Folks’ Association. He was one of the oldest members of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows. A keen bowler, he was a member of the Poverty Bay club.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs F. A. McPhail, Napier, and Mrs. F. W. Roberts, Gisborne, and two sons, Mr A. O. Hay, Waipaoa, and Mr. A. T. Hay, Muriwai. One son lost his life in the great War. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Mrs. D. Brown, Oamaru, Mrs H. Edgley, Napier, Mrs Wilkinson, Dunedin, Mr. James Hay, Palmerston North and formerly of Gisborne, and Mr. Archie Hay, Gisborne.
The funeral service, which was conducted on Saturday by the Rev. John Davie, was attended by many people representing all sections of the community. The pall-bearers were Messrs. T. Redpath, J. W. Wilson, J. Newman, Heath Johnston, J. Robertson and R. Wallen.
