passed away April 5 1942. Remembered by Alex, Allen and dad
The Riverine Grazier (Hay, NSW : 1873 - 1954) Tuesday 8 April 1941 Mrs. Jane A. McFarland; There were many expressions of regret on Saturday morning, when it became known that Mrs. Jane A. McFarland, widow of the late Mr. Andrew McFarland of Thelangerin Station, had passed away. Mrs. McFarland was probably the second oldest district woman resident, and was very highly esteemed by the many people who came in contact with her when she took an active part in the movements in the town and district. Meeting with an accident whereby she broke a bone in her leg about four years ago, she was rendered practically an invalid, but she retained her keen interest in district happenings
notwithstanding, and was ever ready to lend support to any movement for a worthy cause. Mrs. McFarland was the daughter of the late Thomas Dowling, M.L.C., of Jellalabad, Victoria and was born in Tasmania almost 95 years ago. The family shortly after moved to Jellabad, where. Mr. Dowling was a pioneer settler. She was married to the late Mr. Andrew McFarland at Queenscliff, Victoria, on the 12th. March 1874, and with her husband shortly after set out for Thelangerin, travelling from Bendigo by coach. Her new home was a rough bachelor quarters, but she soon set to work to make it attractive, and today the homestead is one of the most comfortable in the district. The late Andrew McFarland was a very public spirited man, and he was associated with all movements to advance the district, and particularly the interests of the stock owners. In his day the district was advancing quickly, and closer settlement was coming into being, Unfortunately many of the settlers were later on compelled to leave or sell their holdings by adverse seasons. Mr. McFarland died at Tattersall's. Hotel, Hay, on the 14 July,1898 He had been to Sydney attending a conference of Stock and Pastures Boards, and. on his return to Hay contracted double pneumonia. He was 58 years of age and had been in Hay district since about 1872. He was then president of the Waradgery Club, the Hay Pastoral and Agricultural Association and the Hay branch of the Pastoralists' Union. He. was also chairman of the Pastures and Stock Protection Board and the Hay Board of Sheep Directors.
In those days, and afterwards, Mrs. McFarland took an active part in town and district movements, and by her generosity rendered substantial
assistance. Those who were associated with her in those movements, retain pleasant memories of her genialness and open-hearted nature. She was one of the founders and first president of the Riverina Women's Club and remained president up to the time of her death. She was a very generous supporter of the Hay Nursing Home. She is survived by four sons Messrs. Robert P., Harold, Eric and Frank McFarland. The funeral took place on Sunday, the interment being in the Church of England ground of the Hay cemetery in the grave of her late husband. The funeral service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Hardingham. There was a representative attendance, particularly of the older residents of the town and district. There were very many beautiful wreaths and floral tokens.
