Barrier Mine Broken Hill Thursday 7th June 1945; Death In Adelaide Of Miss Linda Wald
ADELAIDE.-Miss Linda Wald, one of Adelaide's best-known concert sopranos, died at her home in Hannay Street, Largs Bay, on Tuesday. She
had been ill for about eight months, and it is about nine months since she last sang in Adelaide. Miss Wald was one of the earliest of South Australia's radio singers. She was born in Adelaide, and studied at the Elder Conservatorium under Mme. Quesnel, who was a pupil of the famous Mme. Marchesi, teacher of Dame Nellie Melba. Later, Miss Wald won an Elder Scholarship, and continued her studies under Clive Carey, the former Sadler's Wells opera producer. She gave public and broadcast recitals with such famous artists as Percy Grainger and Albert Mallinson, and appeared as vocalist in association with Sir Richard Terry and Sir Granville Bantock, and as soloist with the Bach Society, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Philharmonic Choir, and the Broken Hill Quartette Club.
Southern Cross (Adelaide, SA) Friday 15 June 1945; Miss Linda Wald. The Late Miss Linda Wald died at her home in Largs Bay on the 5th inst. ....Miss Wald was educated at the Dominican Convent, Cabra, on leaving which she adopted music as a profession. She studied singing at the Elder Conservatorium under Madame Quesnel and subsequently under Clive Carey. …... She was a member of numerous musical bodies and was a successful and conscientious teacher. Miss Waid's death will be regarded as a great loss in Adelaide musical circles, not least by the many Catholic organisations which she was always zealous in assisting with her considerable talents. She was a brilliant interpreter of the best song composers of the world. She had a striking stage personality and great histrionic ability. A really great artist has gone from our midst. To her mother, Mrs. Wald, Largs Bay; to her sister, Mrs. W. Crowe, Springfield; and to her brothers, Squadron-Leader C. Wald, R.A.A.F., and Mr. Bert Wald, Largs Bay, sympathy is here respectfully extended. May her soul rest in peace.
