- Camperdown Chronicle (Vic. ) Tuesday 14 July 1936 THE LATE Miss LEURA DOWLING; The death of Miss Leura Dowling occurred at her residence "Darraweit", Darlington, on Saturday at the advanced age of 86 years. Born at "Old Timboon," near Camperdown in 1850, deceased was the third daughter of the late Hon. Thomas Dowling and Mrs. Maria Dowling (nee Ware), and came to reside at "Jellalabad," Darlington, with her parents when only two years of age. There she lived until 1915, when she moved to "Darraweit" in the Darlington township. Although her health was always delicate the late Miss Dowling's bright and cheerful nature won her the love and esteem of a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and she devoted her life to her church, to numerous charities, and to the keeping up of a great correspondence with the members of the many branches of her family and her friends. Only good works appealed to her happy nature. As a worker for the Darlington Presbyterian Church in particular conducting the Sunday school classes to within six weeks of her death the late Miss Dowling won the affection of three generations, being loved and esteemed by everyone. Returned soldiers always had her active sympathy and during the period of the Great War her loyal and philanthropic character found expression in helping the men overseas. No offer for assistance from any source of this nature ever failed to receive her support. A service held by the Rev. Mr. Thomas in the Darlington Presbyterian Church at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday was largely attended by district residents who mourned her passing. Hymns chosen for the services were "For Ever with the Lord," and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Their simplicity and beauty was symbolical of her nature. Following the service the remains of the late Miss Dowling were interred at the Camperdown Cemetery. Among the many beautiful wreaths laid on the grave was one from the Presbyterian Sunday school at Darlington.
The above sounds like an active and impressive community, but even at the time Leura died ( 1936 ) there would have been no more than 150 residents in the town.
